About Mammoth
Mammoth (Lakes), today, is one of the most popular ski areas in the US. It is a town in Mono County, in the US state of California, and it is the county’s only incorporated community. It is surrounded by mountains, with Mammoth Mountain looming over it, on the west, and the Sherwin Range dominating the view, to the south.
It is believed that the town’s history began as far back as 200 000 years ago, when Mammoth Mountain was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions, which lasted for approximately 150 000 years, the result being lava and rock formations – the area we know today as Mammoth.
The mountain was inaccessible for outsiders, until the mid-19century, due to the fact that there were deserts on three sides and the Sierra Nevada range to the west, but that did not stop Mammoth, becoming what it is today. ...more
